Painful Sex Treatment in Calgary

Pain with intimacy is more common than most people realize, and it is treatable. Our pelvic floor physiotherapists help you feel safe and comfortable in your body again.

Why Does Sex Hurt?

Painful sex, known clinically as dyspareunia, usually has more than one contributing factor. Overly tense pelvic floor muscles, scar tissue from delivery or surgery, hormonal changes, skin conditions, past painful experiences, and a nervous system that has learned to brace can all play a role.

Pain can show up at the entrance, deeper with penetration, during, or for hours afterward. Where and when it happens tells us a lot. Our assessment looks at muscle tone, tissue mobility, breathing, and how your body responds to touch, then builds a plan that moves at your pace.

Who We Help

Pain at the Entrance

Burning, stinging, or a feeling of hitting a wall often comes from protective muscle tension around the vaginal opening. Treatment focuses on downtraining those muscles, restoring tissue mobility, and gradual desensitization.

Deep Pain With Penetration

Pain felt deeper can involve pelvic floor tension, hip and abdominal restrictions, or conditions like endometriosis. We assess the whole region and coordinate with your physician when medical care is part of the picture.

Postpartum and Scar-Related Pain

Perineal tears, episiotomy, and C-section scars can leave tissue that is tight or sensitive. Scar work, manual therapy, and graded exposure help the area move and tolerate contact again.

Vaginismus and Difficulty With Insertion

If tampons, exams, or penetration feel impossible, involuntary muscle guarding is usually the reason. We work step by step, with you in control at every stage, to teach those muscles how to release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the pain in my head?

No. Pain with sex has real physical and neurological drivers, and it is not something you imagined or caused. It responds to treatment.

Will the first appointment involve an internal exam?

Only if you want one. Many first visits are conversation, education, and external assessment. Nothing happens without your consent, and you can stop at any point.

Can my partner come with me?

Yes. Many people find it helpful to bring a partner so you are both working from the same plan.

Do you do direct billing?

We do not direct bill.

After your appointment and payment has been made, an email with a receipt will be sent to the email on your patient profile. These receipts can be submitted to most insurance companies online.

Lose your receipt? No worries!! We can send that over to you anytime upon request.
