Pelvic Organ Prolapse Treatment in Calgary
Heaviness, pressure, or a feeling that something is bulging does not mean surgery is your only option. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can reduce symptoms and help you move with confidence again.
What Is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?
Prolapse is when the bladder, uterus, bowel, or vaginal walls shift downward because the supporting muscles and connective tissue are not holding them as well as they used to. Common causes include pregnancy and delivery, chronic constipation, repeated heavy lifting, chronic coughing, and hormonal change.
Symptoms often include pressure or heaviness in the vagina, a dragging feeling by the end of the day, low back or pelvic ache, difficulty emptying the bladder or bowel, and discomfort with intimacy. The size of a prolapse on an exam does not decide how you feel. Two people with the same grade can have very different symptoms, which is why we treat the person rather than the grade.
Who We Help
Pressure, Heaviness, or a Bulge
If symptoms build through the day or after standing and lifting, we look at how pressure moves through your abdomen and pelvis, then change the load and build support so the tissue is not carrying it alone.
Postpartum Prolapse
Support changes after birth are common and often improve with guided rehab. We build strength gradually and get you back to lifting, running, and carrying your child without fear of making things worse.
Bladder or Bowel Emptying Problems
Prolapse can make it hard to fully empty. We work on positioning, breathing, and coordination so emptying is easier, and we address constipation, which makes every prolapse symptom louder.
Returning to Lifting and Running
You do not have to give up strength training or running. We build a progressive plan that matches your tissue tolerance, so activity becomes part of your recovery instead of a risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can physiotherapy fix a prolapse?
Physiotherapy will not lift tissue back into its original position, but it can reduce symptoms significantly, improve support, and help many people avoid or delay surgery. It also improves outcomes if you do have surgery.
Do I have to stop lifting weights?
No. Lifting with good pressure management is usually part of the plan. We adjust load, position, and breathing rather than removing strength work.
Should I get a pessary?
A pessary can be a helpful support for some people and works well alongside physiotherapy. We can talk through whether it is worth discussing with your physician.
Do you do direct billing?
We do not direct bill.
After your appointment and payment has been made, an email with a receipt will be sent to the email on your patient profile. These receipts can be submitted to most insurance companies online.
Lose your receipt? No worries!! We can send that over to you anytime upon request.
