Infant Feeding 101: Getting Ahead Before It Gets Hard

Feeding is often talked about like it should be intuitive. For many families, it is anything but.

Understand How Infant Feeding Actually Works

Led by a pediatric occupational therapist (OT), this session focuses on how feeding actually works, how babies coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing, and how early setup and support can shape the feeding experience.

Rather than approaching feeding through a breastfeeding-only lens, this session takes a broader, function-based view. We cover both breast and bottle feeding, and look at how positioning, environment, and caregiver support influence feeding success across feeding methods.

Build Confidence with Early Feeding Awareness

The emphasis is on understanding what is typical, what can vary, and what to notice early. We discuss how to support your baby’s comfort, coordination, and regulation from the beginning, and how early awareness can help families respond thoughtfully as feeding patterns develop.

This is not a “do it perfectly” session. It is designed to offer clear explanations, practical guidance, and context, so you can better understand what you are seeing and make informed decisions that fit your baby and your family.

This session is designed for expectant parents and families in the early postpartum stage who want to better understand infant feeding from the start. It is especially helpful if you are looking to feel more prepared, rather than reactive.

Is this class only focused on breastfeeding?

No. This is a function-based session that looks at how feeding works across both breast and bottle feeding. You will learn how to support your baby’s coordination, comfort, and regulation regardless of feeding method.

What makes this different from other feeding classes?

This session is led by a pediatric occupational therapist and focuses on the mechanics of feeding. Instead of step-by-step rules, you will gain a deeper understanding of why feeding looks the way it does and how to respond to your baby with more confidence.

What can I expect from the group format?

Groups are intentionally small, with a maximum of three families, so there is space for discussion, questions, and individualized support within a shared learning environment.

Can my partner or support person join?
