Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs

Help! How can I reach you?

Email: info@covenhealthcollective.com

Phone: 825-734-2025

Where are you located?

Coven Health Collective is located on the 10th floor of the Petwin Square building at 2424 4th Street SW (Calgary, AB).

The building doors will be locked after 5 PM and before 8 AM. You will require a code to access the building doors, and this code will be sent to you via the confirmation email/ text you receive from our booking system

Note: The number pad is to the right of the main doors – press it, we promise it’s a number pad! You’ll have to input the code there and when you’re in the elevator to access the 10th floor (again, we know it looks like a fob sensor, but it has numbers if you press it! We swear!).

How do I get into the building?

The building entrance is located at 2424 4th Street SW (Calgary, AB). The doors face our neighbours at La Boulangerie and South Block.

The building doors will be locked after 5 PM and before 8 AM. You will require a code to access the building doors, and this code will be sent to you via the confirmation email/ text you receive from our booking system

I'm in the building, but where's the clinic?!

Take the elevators up to the 10th floor. Turn right out of the elevators, and then right again once you hit the end of the hall. Keep walking, and you can’t miss us (we’re the only unit down that hall!).

Where do I park?

There is plenty of street parking available through the Calgary Parking Authority in our area or a paid surface parking lot on the East side behind our building.

Is it wheelchair accessible and/or do you have an elevator?

Yes, yes, yes! We (and the Petwin building) are stroller, wheelchair, and mobility aid accessible.

What if I am running late or have to cancel at the last minute?

We require 24 hours’ notice to cancel a session.

If you’re going to be late or need to cancel, please email or call us as soon as possible.

What is your Cancellation Policy?

Your appointment time is reserved just for you. A late cancellation or missed visit leaves a hole in your therapist’s day that could have been filled by another patient. As such, we require 24 hrs notice for any cancellations or changes to your appointment. Patients who provide less than 24 hrs notice, or miss their appointment, will be charged the full amount for their missed appointment.

However, PLEASE NOTE: If you have experienced a fever, cough, runny nose or difficulty breathing in the last two weeks, we ask you not to attend the clinic.

Services FAQs

Who do I book with?

If you’re unsure as to who you should book in with, then please refer to our team page or continue through our FAQ section!

What do I need to complete before my appointment?

Upon booking, you will receive an email from our software system called Jane App. You will be prompted to fill out an online profile, intake form, consent form, and your credit card information.

Consent Forms: Consent forms may be filled out AFTER speaking with your designated practitioner prior to your appointment OR after the assessment and diagnosis have been provided. We require consent prior to any treatments rendered. For some treatments (ex. Pelvic floor internal examinations), you’ll also be asked to complete an intake form before any of the activity is completed. Remember: you can withdraw consent at any time.

Credit Card Information: We request credit card information as per our late cancellation policy. While we understand things come up, a late cancellation of no show fee will be charged as per our cancellation policy listed below.

What do I need to bring to my first appointment?

As we typically perform a physical examination consisting of human movement, we encourage you to wear something comfortable or athletic. If you forget, no sweat, we have shorts, slips, and gowns available!

If you have any patient information such as imaging reports, doctors letters, notes from trainers, etc. that is pertinent to your complaint/reason for your visit, please bring those along so we can add them to your file.

If I am already a patient of another clinic within the Coalition Health Group ecosystem - Vital Performance Care or Coalition Performance Care, what do I book and for how long?

If you have not seen a practitioner before or you are booking a different discipline (ex. You have seen a massage therapist, but not a physiotherapist), it is best to book a 60 MINUTE appointment unless advised otherwise from a Coven staff member. Please note for pelvic physiotherapy, you must book a “NEW PATIENT – PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIOTHERAPY” appointment even if you have seen a different physiotherapist in another Coalition Health Group clinic for orthopedic physiotherapy (ex. for a knee, ankle or other musculoskeletal complaint).

Do you do direct billing?

We do not direct bill.

After your appointment and payment has been made, an email with a receipt will be sent to the email on your patient profile. These receipts can be submitted to most insurance companies online.

Lose your receipt? No worries!! We can send that over to you anytime upon request.

How much can I claim to my insurance company for my visits?

Every insurance provider is different and the allocation of coverage is different for each profession. It is important that you understand your insurance policy so you can make the best of it throughout the year! We are not responsible for keeping track of your third party insurance coverage

Do you provide post-surgical rehabilitation under Alberta Health Services?

While we do provide excellent post-surgical rehabilitation, we are not covered by Alberta Health Services for the government subsidized sessions post-surgery.

Do I need a referral from a doctor?

You do not need a referral from a doctor to attend our clinic. Pro tip: If your insurance company requires a doctor’s referral or note for coverage, then make sure you’ve secured that before your appointment!

Do you treat everyone and not just pelvic conditions?

We treat everyone of all ages and walks of life!

Do you offer support for WCB and MVA services?

We do not provide support for WCB cases. MVA services are offered at the discretion of the clinician.

Chiropractic & Physiotherapy FAQS

What is the difference between chiropractic and physiotherapy?

It depends on the practitioner! At Coven, our physiotherapists and chiropractors often treat very similarly and have a wide array of manual therapy techniques in their toolbelt. For more information on each practitioner, please visit the About Coven section of our website. Remember, if you do not know who to book with, please feel free to give us a call or email us and we will be happy to assist!

How long do I book for?

If you are a new patient to Coven Health Collective, please book a full New Patient Assessment and Treatment appointment. If you are a returning client, your practitioner will likely have informed you to book a follow up appointment at a certain length of time. If they have not, please reach out to us so we can clarify that for you!

Please note: if you have not been to the clinic in a long time (over 6 months) and/or you have a NEW complaint or issue, please book for 45 minutes. It will allow us to have enough time to assess and treat your presenting complaint.

What do I book 20 min appointment times for?

Please note that a 20 minute appointment is ONLY to be booked if you have discussed this with your practitioner and they have recommended it. Most of our appointments are at least 30-60 minutes in length, as we provide a multitude of treatment modalities, exercises and/or assessments.

When in doubt, just give us a shout!

What is the Webster Technique?

(** Please note: this service is only offered under chiropractic services) The Webster Technique is a gentle chiropractic approach that supports lumbopelvic function during pregnancy, helping create more space and ease for both parent and baby. By addressing joint, muscle, and ligament tension, it can help reduce discomfort and optimize function throughout pregnancy.

What if I don't want an adjustment?

If adjustments aren’t your thing, no problem – our chiropractors use a variety of treatment options like soft tissue release, needling, and exercise to support your care.

What is the difference between a pelvic floor physiotherapist and orthopedic physiotherapist?

Pelvic floor physios all have backgrounds in orthopedic physiotherapy, plus additional training to assess and treat the muscles, nerves, connective tissue, and function of the pelvic floor.

Massage Therapy FAQs

Are there different kinds of massage therapy?

Yes! At Coven, our massage therapists offer a variety of treatments, including: pre-natal and post-partum massage, sport massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, scar massage, myofascial therapy, and more! Check out our about section to see who’s offering what!

How do I know who to book with?

Take a look at our massage therapy certifications and bios to get to know our therapists!

What is peri-natal massage therapy?

Perinatal massage therapy supports people through every stage of the pregnancy journey. Our RMTs use safe, evidence-informed techniques to address common concerns like pelvic and low back pain, swelling, tension, and stress. Whether you’re preparing your body for birth or recovering after delivery, we tailor each session to meet your changing needs with care that’s gentle, effective, and affirming.

What is a deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage therapy is a type of massage that focuses on reaching deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue (called fascia).

The therapist uses slower strokes and firmer pressure than a typical relaxation massage. They might use their fingers, knuckles, elbows, or forearms to apply targeted pressure, aiming to improve mobility and optimize function.

What is a relaxation massage?

A relaxation massage, also often called a “spa massage”, is a gentle, soothing treatment designed primarily to help you unwind, de-stress, and feel calm physically and mentally.

Unlike therapeutic styles like deep tissue massage, the focus here isn’t on treating specific pain or dysfunction, but rather on wellness and central nervous system relaxation.

Pelvic Floor FAQs

What can I expect at my first pelvic health physio visit?

Your initial visit is 75 minutes and takes place one-on-one with your physiotherapist in a private treatment room. The session begins with a thorough discussion of your health history, current concerns, and goals.

Depending on your needs and comfort, we may complete an external orthopedic assessment (ex. Joint assessments, movement patterns, strength), and/or an internal vaginal or rectal examination to assess pelvic floor function.

Following the assessment, your physiotherapist will explain their findings, review relevant anatomy and contributing factors, and collaborate with you to create a personalized treatment plan.

What does an internal pelvic exam involve?

An internal exam involves the insertion of a gloved finger into the vagina and/or rectum in order to evaluate pelvic floor function, coordination, tone, and tissue health.

Your physiotherapist will walk you through each step and ensure you are fully informed and comfortable before proceeding.

What if I prefer not to have an internal exam or treatment?

That’s absolutely fine. While internal assessments can provide valuable insight, they’re not the only way forward! We will always work within your comfort level and adapt treatment accordingly.

What if I change my mind, and mid-internal exam I don’t want to continue?

You are welcome to decline or withdraw consent at any time. Your body, your choice.

Can I still come if I have my period?

Yes!

In fact, it can sometimes be helpful for us to assess how your symptoms shift during different points of your cycle.

We’re comfortable if you’re comfortable, but let us know and we’ll happily reschedule!

Can I bring my baby or kids?

Yes!

We’re pro-kid around here!

Can I have an internal exam while I’m pregnant?

Yes – after the first trimester, and only if it’s safe and you’re comfortable. If your doctor or midwife has advised avoiding intercourse or internal exams during pregnancy, we’ll absolutely follow that guidance.

How soon should I come in after giving birth?

We recommend waiting until the six-week mark.

I tried Kegels and they didn’t work. Now what?

You’re not alone, and for many people, Kegels are going to just make things worse.  Pelvic health physiotherapy goes well beyond Kegels, and we’ll assess what your body and pelvic floor actually needs (relaxation, coordination, strength, all of the above, or something completely different) and tailor a plan that works for you.

PS. We’ve never met someone who actually knows how to do a Kegel (thanks for nothing, Cosmopolitan Magazine).

Therapeutic Pilates FAQs

What do I wear?

Whatever lets you move comfortably and breathe easily.

Do you offer duo sessions for reformer workouts?

Potentially! Our sessions are one-on-one so we can tailor everything – from exercises to education, and everything in between! – to your body, your goals, and your healing timeline. If and when we do expand out of 1:1 reformer sessions, they’ll be thoughtfully curated, and never one-size-fits-all.

Will I need more than one private session?

Probably! Most folks benefit from a short series of sessions to build strength, confidence, and real change. That said, we’ll always keep things collaborative and honest. If one session does the trick, amazing. If you need more, we’ll map it out together.

Are my sessions covered under my private insurance?

It depends! Some sessions may be covered if you’re working with a registered provider and Pilates is part of your treatment plan. Others might be eligible under a Health Spending Account. The best bet? Ask your provider directly to confirm what your plan includes.

Is it safe to do Pilates during pragnancy or post-partum?

As long as there have been no contraindications flagged by your care team, then yes! Peri-natal (i.e. the prenatal and post-partum periods) Pilates helps support your body through the wild ride of pregnancy by improving core strength, pelvic floor function, posture, and breath awareness. Our instructors are trained to modify sessions based on your trimester, symptoms, and comfort level.

Can I do Pilates if I've had surgery / are having surgery?

Absolutely. We regularly support folks navigating post-op recovery, pre-op preparation, and everything in between. We’ll always screen for surgical history and tailor your session to your current abilities, restrictions, and healing goals.

How is the offering at Coven different from a group Pilates class?

We’re not here for generic cues or “just follow along!” vibes. Your practitioner is trained to assess movement, modify for pain or injury, and integrate clinical reasoning into every session so that you’re moving with intention.

Occupational Therapy FAQs

What does an occupational therapist do?

An occupational therapist helps you improve your ability to perform daily activities that may be affected by injury, illness, surgery, or life transitions. Treatment focuses on restoring function, adapting routines, and improving overall quality of life.

How is occupational therapy different from physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy typically focuses on restoring physical movement, strength, and mobility.

Occupational therapy focuses on how your physical health affects daily activities such as work, caregiving, self care, and routines, and helps you adapt or rebuild those abilities.

Both approaches often work together to support full recovery.

Do I need a referral for occupational therapy in Calgary?

In most cases, you do not need a referral to book occupational therapy. You can schedule an appointment directly with Coven Health Collective.

How many occupational therapy sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, symptoms, and stage of recovery. Your therapist will create a personalized care plan and adjust it as you progress.

Can occupational therapy help with hormonal life transitions like menopause?

Yes. Occupational therapy can help you manage fatigue, adapt daily routines, support joint health, and maintain function during hormonal transitions such as perimenopause and menopause.

Acupuncture FAQs

What conditions can acupuncture help treat?

Acupuncture is a versatile, evidence-informed treatment that can support a wide range of conditions. At Coven Health Collective in Calgary, we commonly use acupuncture to help with:

  • Chronic pain such as back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Stress, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation
  • Sports injuries and muscle tension
  • Digestive concerns
  • Hormonal imbalances and menstrual health
  • Sleep issues and fatigue

Your treatment is always tailored to your specific symptoms, goals, and overall health.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. The needles used are extremely thin, much finer than those used for injections.

You may feel:

  • A slight pinch as the needle is inserted
  • A dull ache, warmth, or tingling sensation
  • A deep sense of relaxation during treatment

Many patients leave feeling calmer, lighter, and more connected to their body.

How many acupuncture sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your condition, how long you’ve had it, and your goals.

  • Acute issues may improve in just a few sessions
  • Chronic or complex conditions typically require a series of treatments
  • Ongoing care may be recommended for performance, prevention, and long-term wellness

At Coven Health Collective, we create a clear, personalized treatment plan so you always know what to expect.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. Acupuncture is considered very safe when performed by trained professionals.

At our Calgary clinic, we follow strict safety and hygiene protocols:

  • Single-use, sterile needles
  • Thorough health assessments before treatment
  • Evidence-based techniques tailored to you

Your comfort and safety are always our priority.

What should I expect during my first acupuncture session?

Your first visit is focused on understanding you as a whole person, not just your symptoms.

We will:

  • Discuss your health history, lifestyle, and goals
  • Assess movement, tension, and areas of concern
  • Develop a personalized treatment plan
  • Begin your acupuncture treatment

You will leave with clarity, direction, and a plan for your recovery and progress.

Can acupuncture be combined with other treatments?

Absolutely. In fact, it works best as part of an integrated approach.

At Coven Health Collective in Calgary, acupuncture is often combined with:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Massage therapy
  • Rehabilitation exercise programs
  • Holistic wellness strategies

This collaborative model helps you get better results, faster and more sustainably.

What should I do before and after my acupuncture appointment?

To get the most out of your acupuncture session:

Before your appointment:

  • Eat a light meal
  • Stay hydrated
  • Wear comfortable clothing

After your session:

  • Take it easy and allow your body to process
  • Stay hydrated
  • Pay attention to how your body feels

Small shifts after treatment are normal and often a sign your body is responding.

Lymphatic Drainage FAQs

Who can benefit from lymphatic drainage?

Lymphatic drainage can support people experiencing swelling, fluid retention, inflammation, fatigue, or post surgical recovery. It may also benefit individuals seeking immune support or improved circulation.

Does Lymphatic Drainage “Detox” the Body?

Many people search for “lymphatic detox massage,” but the term detox is often misunderstood. Your body already has powerful detoxification systems. The liver, kidneys, lungs, and digestive system are responsible for filtering and eliminating waste products. The lymphatic system does not detoxify the body in the way these organs do. Instead, it helps transport fluid, immune cells, and proteins through the lymphatic vessels and back into circulation. Manual lymphatic drainage supports this fluid movement and tissue recovery, rather than “flushing toxins” out of the body.

Is lymphatic drainage painful?

No. The treatment uses gentle, rhythmic techniques. Many people find the experience calming and deeply relaxing.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your goals and health condition. Some people benefit from occasional sessions while others require a short series of treatments for recovery support.

Can lymphatic drainage help after surgery?

Yes. Many individuals use lymphatic therapy after surgery to support fluid movement, reduce swelling, and assist the body during healing. Your therapist will determine the safest approach based on your recovery stage.

Clinical Pilates FAQs

What is the difference between Clinical Pilates and regular Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is guided by healthcare professionals and tailored to support rehabilitation and specific physical conditions. Regular Pilates classes are typically fitness focused and not individualized.

Is Clinical Pilates good for back pain?

Yes. Clinical Pilates is commonly used to improve core stability, posture, and spinal support, which can help reduce many types of back pain.

Do I need Pilates experience?

No experience is required. Your clinician will guide you through every exercise and adjust movements to your comfort and ability level.

Are sessions private or group based?

Clinical Pilates at Coven Health Collective is delivered one on one, allowing full attention to your technique, progress, and individual goals.

How often should I do Clinical Pilates?

This depends on your goals and current condition. Many people benefit from one to two sessions per week initially, with programs adjusted as strength and control improve.

Is Clinical Pilates only for injury recovery?

Not at all. While it is excellent for rehabilitation, Clinical Pilates is also widely used for strength development, posture improvement, injury prevention, and performance training.

Pediatric Occupational Therapy FAQs

What does a pediatric occupational therapist help with?

A pediatric occupational therapist helps infants and children develop the skills needed for daily activities such as play, learning, self care, and movement. Therapy may focus on sensory regulation, motor skills, emotional regulation, and independence.

At what age can a child start occupational therapy?

Infants and children can begin occupational therapy at many stages of development. Early support is often beneficial when developmental challenges or delays are identified.

Do I need a referral for pediatric occupational therapy in Calgary?

In most cases, you do not need a referral to book pediatric occupational therapy. Families can contact Coven Health Collective directly to schedule an appointment.

What happens during a pediatric occupational therapy session?

Sessions typically include play based activities designed to develop motor skills, sensory regulation, and functional abilities. Therapists also provide guidance and strategies for parents to support progress at home.

How many sessions will my baby or child need?

The number of sessions depends on your child’s goals and needs. Your therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan and adjust it as your child progresses.

Manual Osteopathy FAQs

How is manual osteopathy different from physiotherapy?

While there can be some overlap in techniques, manual osteopathic therapy in Calgary focuses on how different systems in the body work together. Treatment considers joints, muscles, connective tissue, and internal structures as part of an integrated system. This whole body approach helps identify underlying movement restrictions that may contribute to pain or dysfunction.

What conditions can manual osteopathic therapy help with?

Many people seek osteopathy treatment in Calgary for concerns such as:

• Neck and back pain
• Headaches and migraines
• Muscle tension and stiffness
• Postural strain from desk work
• Joint mobility restrictions
• Sports related strain or overuse injuries
• Stress related tension patterns

Your practitioner will assess your symptoms and determine whether manual osteopathic therapy is appropriate for your needs.

What happens during a manual osteopathic therapy appointment?

Your appointment at Coven Health Collective in Calgary begins with a discussion about your symptoms, health history, and movement concerns. Your practitioner then performs a movement and postural assessment before beginning hands on treatment. Gentle manual techniques are used to release restrictions and improve mobility.

Is manual osteopathic therapy painful?

Treatment is typically very gentle and designed to work with your body rather than force it. Most patients experience a sense of release, relaxation, or improved mobility during and after treatment. Mild soreness can occasionally occur but usually resolves quickly.

How many sessions of manual osteopathy will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your condition, lifestyle, and treatment goals. Some people notice improvement within a few visits, while others benefit from a series of treatments to address longer term patterns in the body.

Is manual osteopathic therapy safe?

Manual osteopathic therapy is considered a safe and non invasive treatment when performed by a trained practitioner. Techniques are adapted to your body and comfort level, making the treatment suitable for many people seeking gentle, hands on care.

Do I need a referral for manual osteopathic therapy in Calgary?

In most cases, you do not need a referral to book manual osteopathic therapy in Calgary. You can schedule an appointment directly with Coven Health Collective. However, some insurance plans may have specific requirements, so it is helpful to check with your provider.

Infant Feeding 101 FAQs

Who is this group class for?

This session is designed for expectant parents and families in the early postpartum stage who want to better understand infant feeding from the start. It is especially helpful if you are looking to feel more prepared, rather than reactive.

Is this class only focused on breastfeeding?

No. This is a function-based session that looks at how feeding works across both breast and bottle feeding. You will learn how to support your baby’s coordination, comfort, and regulation regardless of feeding method.

What makes this different from other feeding classes?

This session is led by a pediatric occupational therapist and focuses on the mechanics of feeding. Instead of step-by-step rules, you will gain a deeper understanding of why feeding looks the way it does and how to respond to your baby with more confidence.

What can I expect from the group format?

Groups are intentionally small, with a maximum of three families, so there is space for discussion, questions, and individualized support within a shared learning environment.

Can my partner or support person join?

Yes. You are encouraged to attend together. Having both caregivers present helps create consistency and confidence when applying what you learn at home.

How do I sign up?

To join an upcoming group, simply click here in our online booking page and choose a convenient time.

You can also reach out to Coven Health Collective through our contact page to learn about available dates and reserve your spot. We will guide you through the next steps.

Potentially yes! As this session is led by an occupational therapist, it may be eligible for coverage. Be sure to check your individual policy for details.
